After developing a global outlook as a master’s and doctoral student for nearly eight years in Australia, I returned to China and applied my skills, knowledge, and experience in several roles. Since 2016, I have taught English to mixed proficiency classes at undergraduate level, as well as one-on-one/small group teaching for learners aged 4 to 17. In addition, I have developed a keen interest in various aspects of international education in China in my capacity as a consultant. At the same time, my experience raising a bilingual child has provided me with further insight into the interdisciplinary value that bilingualism can bring to learners. This knowledge of the cognitive complexity and non-linear nature of language learning has enabled me to design and implement differentiated materials to suit individual student’s current lexical level and their pace of learning. These roles have further deepened my appreciation and empathy for the unique struggles of learning a foreign language experienced by emergent bilinguals. My own academic trajectory reflects a strong commitment to excellence. Being a willing and capable learner myself, I am committed to the philosophy that all students can thrive through a purposeful and stimulating learning context.
